Bio
Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Don fled a secure job in the Irish Civil Service and emigrated to New York in 1985, where he has lived ever since. His acting appearances include The Tunnel, Away Alone, Down the Flats, The Plough and The Stars and The Risen People. As Artistic Director of Macalla Theatre Company, he directed Tuesday’s Child, The Lobby, The Famine Diaries, and Rinty. He also directed Moonshine Off-Broadway. Don’s written plays include Celtic Tiger Me Arse, The Lobby, and Dry Rot. His one act play Blind Date was a finalist at the Samuel French 2008 Short Play Festival and his short play Ladies’ Night was a finalist at the American Globe Theater’s 2009 15-minute Play Festival. In March 2010, Don co-founded Poor Mouth Theatre Company at An Beal Bocht CafĂ© in the Bronx, where his new short plays Celtic Tiger Wake and Shackled both appeared as part of their inaugural production Puttin' On Your Shorts. Don's most recent full-length play, Guy Walks into a Bar, received the 1st Irish 2010 Theatre Festival Audience Award for Best Play. Also in 2010, Don was nominated for Best Director 1st Irish 2010 Theatre Festival for the US premier of Dermot Bolger's one-woman play The Holy Ground. During 2011, Don directed You'll be Happy When I'm Dead, a new play by Bill Rutkoski at The Producers Club and Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane at The Riverdale Y. His short play Divine Intervention was also produced by Aching Dogs Theatre Company at the Hudson Guild Theater. Don is a Fellow of the Blue Mountain Center and the MacDowell Colony, and also a member of the Dramatist Guild of America.
